Program Summary
Students in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Technology program acquire the skills and experience to pursue a diverse range of career opportunities in the field of civil engineering.
Civil engineers and technicians work on every phase of design and construction of buildings, roadways, bridges, public water systems, dams, landfills, and recreation facilities.
The program is accredited by Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), 111 Market Place, Suite 1050 Baltimore, MD 21202-4012, 410-347-7700.
Areas of Study
The program provides training in the following areas of study:
- Civil engineering design;
- Surveying;
- Materials testing;
- The construction process;
- Structural design of buildings;
- Water and wastewater engineering; and
- Solid waste management.
Students also learn to prepare construction drawings using computer-aided drafting and design (CADD) equipment at state-of-the-art computer workstations.
Career Opportunities
Graduates of the program have the opportunity to work outdoors on construction and surveying projects, or indoors in design or estimating offices. Typical employers of program graduates include:
- Engineering design firms;
- Government agencies;
- Construction firms;
- Testing laboratories.
Some program graduates pursue certification as registered professional engineers.
Regarding additional education, many graduates continue in Vermont Tech's Bachelor of Science program in Architectural Engineering Technology while some graduates transfer to four-year engineering degree programs at other schools. For example, Vermont Tech has strong articulation practices with Norwich University's Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering program.
Enrollment Information
The program encourages enrollment among both traditional students who have graduated high school and non-traditional students interested in career change or career advancement.
Students who have prior experience may be able to test out of some basic course requirements. Evaluations are based on prior experience and level of skill, and are made on a student-by-student basis.
The Civil and Environmental Engineering program is offered in both two- and three-year formats, with the three-year program requiring additional coursework in math. All program applicants take a math placement test, which determines whether they should pursue the program on a two-year or three-year basis.
Prerequisites and Other Requirements
Students must have a strong secondary-level background in mathematics. Strong secondary-level performance in physics and chemistry is also recommended.
All enrolled students must have a scientific calculator.
The minimum number of credits required for a degree is 70.
Campus Locations
The Civil and Environmental Engineering program is offered at Vermont Tech's main campus in Randolph Center.
